Recently, the Department of Justice filed charges against nine Iranian hackers over alleged attacks on more than 300 universities in the United States and abroad. The suspects are charged with breaking in to the networks of:

  • 144 US universities in the US
  • 176 universities in 21 countries outside the US (roughly 8,000 professors)
  • 47 private companies
  • the United Nations,
  • US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
  • The states of Hawaii and Indiana

The DOJ says the hackers stole 31 terabytes of data, estimated to be worth $3 billion in intellectual property.

Importantly – Officials also stressed that the hacking was conducted at the behest of the Iranian government, and Mabna Institute functioned as a contractor for the Revolutionary Guard. That’s State sponsored hacking.
